Golden Valley has been around since 1855 when it was founded by German-American pioneers who settled on this land to escape religious persecution and rigid cultural traditions back East. Golden Valley, Minnesota, is a small town that has been around for more than 150 years. Golden Valley was first settled in 1852 and became the county seat of Golden Valley County in 1917 after it got its own post office from Saint Cloud. The community reached an apex population size of 100 residents by 2000 but has shrunk to just fifty people, with many businesses closing down or moving elsewhere since 2006. One major attraction within Golden Valley is the Golden Gopher Machine Company which started production on their machine tools back in 1886 when they opened up shop along railroad tracks near old Highway 212 (I-94). One-time owner Francis J. Bartell Sr. invented one of his most important inventions here: The Universal Grinder used for metalworking.
