The 5 Best Ways to Dry Carpet

Service Restoration has locations nationwide with disaster restoration and recovery experts available 24/7.

Carpet Cleaning - Service Restoration

If you’re trying to dry a small carpet or an expensive rug, its best to remove from the water soaked area, and let it hang outside until completely dry. On the other hand, if you’re trying to dry anything larger than a small piece of carpet, you’re going to have to dry it where it lies.

Method 1

  1. Towels for wet carpet. The easiest way to dry an area of wet carpet, is to lay down the appropriate amount of towels to cover the water stained area.
  2. Use your body weight and soak up the water by walking over the carpets until the towels are fully saturated.
  3. Keep at this, until the areas is completely dry.
  4. If you are able, check underneath the carpet and see if the pad is still soaked. If so, you might need to place a fan on the area to help speed up the drying.

Method 2

Vacuum
  1. Vacuum the carpet. This is how the pros do it. But unless you have a commercial heavy duty extraction vacuum, it might take longer than just calling a water damage restoration company up. Be sure to never use a regular home vacuum. These are not made to take in water and could result in some serious damage.
  2. Vacuum the carpet with a wet vacuum cleaner until you stop sucking up water. Although you will see the water being removed from the carpet, this does not mean it was able to suck any water from the padding.
  3. Be sure to empty the fill tank of the vacuum before it fills up. Depending on the amount of water, you might need to dump it out a few times.

Method 3

  1. Forced evaporation. This method should be used in conjunction with the other two methods for best results. Take some household fans, hair dryers, and even a dehumidifier, and use it on the affected areas.
  2. Make sure they are all pointed in the areas of moisture to effectively pull out any water from the padding.
  3. Once complete, check under your carpet and ensure the pad has been completely dried out.

Method 4

    1. Drying wet carpet wall-to wall. If your water extends throughout your whole carpet, further actions are necessary.
    • First you will need to move any furniture out of the way, so neither the carpet nor furniture continues to get damaged.
    1. Use a wet vac and remove as much water as possible from the entire area. See if you can rent a professional water extraction vacuum from a local carpet cleaner.
    2. Start to raise the carpet from each corner. Use pliers to pull the carpet form the staples and start separating from the pad.
      • Make sure not to cut the carpet, as it’s a lot more difficult to put back together.
      • Fold each corner of the carpet so you can see the pad.
    3. Use a fan to dry out carpet and pad. If the subfloor seems dry, continue to dry out the carpet and pad using and fan you have at your disposal.
      • You can also attach a hose from a wet/dry vac to the exhaust, placing the hose under the carpet as far into it as you can. This will force hot air under the carpet in between the pad, causing it to raise and speed up the process of drying.
