Historic buildings present unique challenges following significant water damage, where rapid stabilization must be balanced with preserving original building materials. During an active roofing repair project, a roof failure allowed significant water intrusion into a historic museum and school. The commercial roofing contractor immediately called Service Restoration for emergency response.
Water spread throughout the school, affecting numerous areas and causing severe damage, including buckling of the gymnasium wood flooring. Due to the historic nature of the building and the extent of the loss, Service Restoration developed and implemented an applied structural drying plan designed to rapidly stabilize the environment and preserve as much of the existing structure as possible.
Large-scale drying equipment and temporary power were deployed, including desiccant dehumidification, generators, dehumidifiers, and air movers. The drying system was strategically monitored and adjusted as conditions improved to reduce secondary damage and return the structure to acceptable drying conditions.
The scope of work included:
- Emergency water extraction and stabilization
- Applied structural drying
- Desiccant dehumidification
- Temporary power and generator deployment
- Strategic placement of dehumidifiers and air movers
- Drying and stabilization of historic building materials
- Moisture monitoring and documentation
- Coordination with the roofing contractor and facility
- Rapid deployment of commercial mitigation crews
